Award-winning theatre company Wela Kapela Productions is set to enchant East London with their dazzling rendition of Alice in Wonderland at the Guild Theatre this December.
Known for their vibrant and imaginative productions, this year’s performance promises a new kind of magic that blends innovation, talent, and whimsy.
Founder and director Amanda Bothma, who has consistently raised the bar for local theatre, says this production is a labour of love.
“Every year, we strive to bring the highest standard of theatre to our audiences, but we always add something fresh.
“This year, the magic is truly in the cast. Alice in Wonderland offers a whimsical escape from reality, a world where the impossible becomes possible. I’m so grateful to work with some of East London’s finest talent,” she said.
The production boasts a 35-member cast of seasoned actors, supported by a 34-person team handling costumes, technical work, and marketing. The cast includes standout performers such as Payton Luyt, Tamsyn Turner, Kyra Goldswain, Chebo Ndzimela, Daluxolo Mgweba, Asekhona Gila, Mava Gqeba, Nicolene Greyvenstein and Sonwa Sakuba.
Set designer and stage manager Micaela Pike has pulled out all the stops to transform the Guild Theatre stage into Lewis Carroll’s fantastical Wonderland.
Ingenious techniques will depict Alice’s famous shrinking and growing scenes, immersing audiences in a surreal, ever-changing dreamscape.
“Our team has created a Wonderland bursting with vibrant colors, oversized props, and constantly shifting scenes,” Pike said.
“Every element, from whimsical patterns to dynamic transitions, has been crafted to transport audiences into the magic and madness of this beloved story.”
This production brings the classic characters — Alice, the Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit, and the Mad Hatter — to life while introducing fresh faces like Nurse Nora Knowalot and the Knave of Hearts.
Chebo Ndzimela, who plays the White Rabbit, shared how the story resonates with SA audiences. “The White Rabbit carries the big responsibility of finding the champion of muchness,” he said.
“This role is special because it shows how bravery and self-belief can inspire others. Sometimes, we need people who see our potential even when we don’t see it ourselves.”
Since its publication in 1865, Alice in Wonderland has captured the imaginations of readers, theatre-goers, and filmmakers alike. Its whimsical yet profound exploration of identity, courage, and curiosity continues to inspire adaptations worldwide. On stage, it offers directors and designers a boundless playground to bring Carroll’s surreal world to life, delighting audiences of all ages.
Bothma and her team aim to honour this legacy while adding their unique touch, making the story relatable to today’s audience.
