Genre: Musical, Fantasy
One of the most anticipated films of 2024 has finally premiered and, thankfully, it is just as good as promised, if not better. Wicked is the first of a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name, by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, which is loosely based on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz novel.
Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), a young woman who is misunderstood because of her green skin, forms an unlikely friendship with Galinda (Ariana Grande), a preppy girl who’s obsessed with being the most popular one at Shiz University in the Land of Oz.
After an encounter with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum), their new friendship is put to the ultimate test.
Grande and Erivo are incredible in their respective roles, individually and as a duo.
Their vocal abilities are on full display and add much to the film’s overall enjoyment.
Grande has cemented herself as a pop singer, but her skills as an actress deserve praise too, as most of the humour in the film comes from her portrayal of Galinda.
Erivo’s portrayal of Elphaba is beautiful, as she delivers a powerful and heartfelt performance infusing the character with raw emotion and a profound sense of strength.
The raw emotion and struggles that her character experience makes her somehow relatable, despite being a green witch in a fantasy film.
Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, Jonathan Bailey and Ethan Slater are great additions to the supporting cast. Their vocal contributions are not as mind-blowing as the leads, but they are just as enjoyable.
There are a few Easter eggs throughout the film that fans of the Wizard of Oz will enjoy.
However, even without prior knowledge, the film is entertaining and worth a watch.
The film is also very appealing visually in the enchanting use of colour and the cinematic backdrops make it a real pleasure to watch.
Every song in the film is a masterpiece. What is this Feeling by Grande and Erivo is particularly fun and highlights both vocalists’ abilities beautifully. Their individual moments in Popular (Grande) and Defying Gravity (Erivo) are amazing to watch. Even if you are not a fan of musicals, these songs will have you wishing for a repeat button at the theatre.
It truly is a spectacular film.
The fact that the story has been split into two films was a good choice, which gives the film a chance to really delve deep into the plot points and character arcs.
The second installment of the film is set to be released in November 2025.
