The East London Festival of Spiritual Heritage, an event that transcends physical appearances, economic status, and social standing, is gearing up for its third Chariot Festival.

Known as the Ratha Yatra, this global celebration takes place in 192 countries, including major cities such as Cape Town, Soweto, London and New York. It highlights themes of love, unity, and shared spiritual heritage.

The Chariot Festival seeks to promote unity in diversity, drawing audiences rich in racial, religious, and cultural backgrounds.

Event organiser Samantha Nadaraju shared her excitement about the progress made over the past two years.

“We’ve been thrilled by the unity shown by different religious groups and by the support from the public, dignitaries from the BCM mayoral council, and even visitors from other provinces and countries,” Nadaraju said.

Despite challenges like last year’s rain, which prevented the chariot procession, attendance remained strong.

“We hope to attract even more people this year and develop a diverse, solid following,” she said.

This year’s festival will be held on December 7, starting at 2pm at the Orient Theatre. The chariot procession will journey along the beachfront esplanade before returning to the theatre for a variety of activities, including a stage play and a free light supper. The festivities will conclude at 7pm.

The event is designed to cater to 500-600 attendees, though past events have seen around 300 people in attendance.

“We hope the Ratha Yatra becomes an annual tourist attraction, a highlight on the calendar for locals and visitors alike,” Nadaraju said.

The Chariot Festival invites everyone to experience its opportunity to embrace unity and diversity in East London.
