Literature is alive and well in Buffalo City, the newest Unesco City of Creative Literature in Africa, with the imminent launch legendary local ex-English teacher Carol Felton’s debut book, Poetic Reflections, on November 20.
Felton, a beloved former Clarendon High School teacher, decided to publish some of her poetry this year and the body of work she has produced, in its fine quality, range, evocative images and rare insight, is a testament to her legacy as an educator with a deep love for her subject.
Her poems are grouped into the categories: environment, education, personal, political and philosophy. The reader is taken on a literary journey that conjures up images, challenges, inspires, celebrates, and stretches the mind. A particularly powerful enhancer of Felton’s work comes from beautiful, impactful, and strikingly relevant illustrations by her friend, Pam Sparg, a highly gifted artist.
Felton said: “The act of writing is an act of faith. From where will the words come? They will come from the heart and the mind — from the thinker, the activist, the carer, the sinner, the saint, the slave, the priest, the poet, the vagabond.
“Words are life-blood; our connection with one another and with the world.”
The launch of Felton’s poetry collection is celebrated particularly by former pupils, on whom she made an indelible impression.
Former pupil, Kate Thompson said: “It is a rare privilege to step into the glow of a great teacher. Good teachers carry the education system and next generations with it. Great teachers change the trajectory of lives.”
